Natalie Marie Cole born February 6, 1950 and died December 31, 2015. Singer Natalie Cole's resume includes eight Grammys, eight gold albums, and three platinum albums. Cole's career, jump-started by the production/songwriting duo of Chuck Jackson & Marvin Yancy, and embedded with a beguiling mix of R&B/soul, pop, gospel, and adult contemporary, has created for the singer a loyal and diversified following. In 2000, she was featured in a segment of VH1's popular Behind the Music series. On November 7 of that year, her Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 was released. A biopic on (and executive produced by) the singer, The Natalie Cole Story, aired on NBC-TV on December 10th. Despite such acclaim and being the daughter of the great Nat "King" Cole, it may come as a surprise that Natalie Cole didn't start singing until her college days at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Meeting manager Kevin Hunter, she began singing jazz/supper club tunes at various clubs and lounges, though sometimes just billed as "Nat Cole's daughter." A friend of Hunter's, manager Bob Schwaid said that he had a songwriting/production duo that was looking for a female singer to work with. Flying to Chicago, Cole met with Chuck Jackson and Marvin Yancy. The trio hit it off and began working at Curtis Mayfield's Curtom studios in late 1974, along with arranger/saxophonist Gene Barge. After being rejected by every label, Cole sparked the interest of Capitol Records executive Larkin Arnold through demos done with Jackson and Yancy. Capitol Records was her late father's label, too. Her first hit, "This Will Be," was issued on June 30, 1975, parked at number one R&B for two weeks, peaking at number six pop on Billboard's charts in fall 1975. The following year, Cole won a Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for "This Will Be," the Best New Artist of the Year, and was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Performance for her gold album, Natalie. More number one R&B singles followed: "Inseparable," "Sophisticated Lady (She's a Different Lady)," "I've Got Love on My Mind," and "Our Love." Jackson and Yancy and Barge won a Grammy for "Sophisticated Lady." The trio earned gold and platinum albums: Inseparable, Natalie, Unpredictable, Thankful, Natalie... Live, and I Love You So. Cole hosted her own network TV special on CBS-TV, The Natalie Cole Special, with guests Earth, Wind & Fire, Johnny Mathis, and Stephen Bishop, which aired in April 1978. She also co-hosted the NBC-TV special Uptown: A Musical Comedy History of Harlem's Apollo Theater, which featured a video montage of her late father. Cole married Marvin Yancy on July 31, 1976, had a son, Robert Adam Yancy, and divorced a few years later. Many of the sides Chuck Jackson & Marvin Yancy produced for Natalie Cole are on the 1990 Capitol CD The Collection, the 1995 EMI-Capitol CD I've Got Love on My Mind, This Will Be: Natalie Cole's Everlasting Love, and the HOL CD Sophisticated Lady. Substance abuse led to Cole missing concert dates and giving erratic performances. In 1981, Capitol Records opted not to renew her contract. In 1983, the singer checked in the Hazelden rehabilitation clinic in Minneapolis. Six years later, she married producer Andre Fischer. He produced her Unforgettable album, which won six Grammys including Record of the Year. 1987's Everlasting LP went gold and yielded three hit singles. Her 1996 album Stardust featured another electronic-created duet with her father, "When I Fall in Love," which won a 1997 Grammy. In fall 2000, Warner Books issued Natalie Cole's autobiography, Angel on My Shoulder, which was co-written with Digdy Diehl.
